Donuts are a delightful treat enjoyed by people worldwide. Whether you prefer them glazed, filled, or topped with sprinkles, making them at home is easier than you might think. Follow this step-by-step guide to create soft and delicious donuts.
Ingredients:
For the Dough:
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- ¾ cup warm milk (around 110°F/43°C)
- 1 large egg
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For Frying:
- Vegetable oil (enough for deep frying)
For Glazing (Optional):
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2–3 tablespoons milk
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
- Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, mix the warm milk and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt.
- Combine Wet Ingredients: Add the yeast mixture, egg, softened butter, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
- Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5–7 minutes.
- Let the Dough Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
Step 2: Shape the Donuts
- Roll the Dough: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface to about ½-inch thickness.
- Cut the Donuts: Use a donut cutter or two round cutters (one larger for the donut and one smaller for the hole) to cut out the shapes. Re-roll scraps as needed.
- Second Rise: Place the cut donuts on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover them, and let them rise for another 30–45 minutes until puffed.
Step 3: Fry the Donuts
- Heat the Oil: In a large pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the Donuts: Carefully place 2–3 donuts into the hot oil at a time. Fry each side for 1–2 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Drain: Remove the donuts using a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined tray to drain excess oil.
Step 4: Glaze or Decorate
- Prepare the Glaze: In a bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Glaze the Donuts: Dip each donut into the glaze while still slightly warm, then place on a wire rack to set.
- Optional Toppings: Add sprinkles, chocolate drizzle, or nuts while the glaze is wet.
Step 5: Enjoy!
Serve your homemade donuts fresh and warm with your favorite beverage. They are best enjoyed the same day but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
Now you have a batch of soft, golden donuts to impress your family and friends!
